He, himself and other class musicians

And so the Magnificent Marah continued his tour to spread the word of his new EP Me, Myself and I with a return visit to Gateshead and the Station East, before a home crowd in the Voodoo Rooms. The EP is out on streaming platforms now, so if you haven’t already, go check it out, that’s Carl Marah, for those not paying attention. Oh, it’s magnificent!! A thing of beauty, charm, wistfulness, I could go on. It was released into the ether Friday 5th June, the same day that Mr Marah played Gateshead, but this time with the band, ooo.

I’d pondered on going down, it’s a great pub with a good range of beer and real ciders, and there’s the pie fridge at the end of the bar too. Of course, last time it was a long lazy Sunday afternoon session, okay for getting back up afterwards, I’d maybe have to book a room this time. Could I justify it when I’d be seeing him five days later at the Voodoo Rooms? Well, no harm just checking the train times…. hallelujah, the last train up is much later than it used to be, yay. A nice cheap Lumo train at 11.10, sweet, the return ticket came in at just under twenty five quid!

What a gorgeous afternoon and lucky me, my seat was on the left-hand side of the train so I could enjoy the coast views (they really are something to watch out for if you ever travel up to Edinburgh on the east coast line). Once in Newcastle I had a wander round before crossing over the bridge to Gateshead and the Station East. Again, what a smashing pub, lovely barstaff, a hug from AJ.Potter, the locals are a friendly bunch so plenty of chat, the early evening sun kinda delayed the start of the gig I think (you know when it’s still too warm to realise that time is passing). AJ. Potter kicked things off again with his delightfully honest folkish (his word and I agree) songs. An excellent entree before a main course of Marah!

Anyone that saw clips of Carl the last time he played the Station East may be wondering where the band would fit, that’s a tiny space by the staircase! Aha, go left at the bar and there’s a dark, high arched room (possibly part of an old railway arch?), almost a bit spooky but a good space for gigs, and this was a good gig, indeed. An hour and a half of sheer joy and bliss, good humour with an occasional touch of bittersweet, a warm fuzzy hug of an evening; just how it is watching Carl perform any time, but maxed up with the added band elements; then, of course, five days later in Edinburgh there was keyboards too, oh, my heartses!

For keyboards Carl has called on his old Buccaneering pal, Luke Cunningham, of course he would, the guy’s brilliant; and as it happens, in a band with Gavin Lamont and Simon Toner. Sekoya is a contemporary jazz collective, formed as a project for the three, usually sidemen, to develop their own sound together. A great stroke of fortuosity for Carl to get all three to back him?! To have two of them with him in London and Gateshead was awesome, but all three at the Voodoo Rooms was epic. The shades, the sounds almost like textures you could feel, well, okay, that might just be the effect on me, honestly, it was glorious.

The setlist was the same order but with more songs as time allowed. Cat’s Eyes seems to get longer every time they play it, no bad thing; yeah, I must go to the Inverness gig at the end of July, it’ll be well over fifteen minutes by then, haha. Carl gave the rest of the band a wee break when he played a new song solo on his acoustic guitar, he said new, I’ve heard Day By Day a few times now, but yeah, new. The VR gig also had the brilliant Don’t Wanna Love You No More as the encore, wowzah, what a way to round off the night.

I’ll sign off now as the Moanin’ Bones will have started at Stramash, but I’ll just mention that Carl will be in Glasgow at McChuills on the 8th July, just saying. Toodle pip!

Not your average Sunday evening

Oh lordy, so glad I got back up yesterday evening! I knew that The Buccaneers were playing Stramash at ten, which is always good, but I had no idea they would be that good! Wowzah. On fire they were, and with plenty new covers too. I didn’t arrived back in Edinburgh until the back of eight, just time to put things away, eat and faff a while; well, I wasn’t convinced it wouldn’t actually be a ten thirty start in reality.

Nope, it was ten o’clock, The Buccaneers were already getting down to business when I trotted in, with fellow creative James Gilhooly filming them. Did his presence perk up the performances? Was it the new set list? Was it the joy of having Luke Cunningham was back with his keyboards? Whatever it was, the band were soaring and took the crowd along with them.

Stramash was up for a good time last night, plenty were out with it being a Bank Holiday weekend, Mr Marah was on fire, yes, he’s always good but last night was one of those special nights, he was totally in his element, oh he shone (shined?) brightly. I look forward to what James Gilhooly will put together from the evening, when it’s out I will let you know, really you will have to see it, it’s gonna be awesome!

Among the new tunes were Heard It Through The Grapevine, The Weight (the song with the line “Take a load off fanny” see now you know the one), Feeling Alright? a classic originally by Traffic. Donavon song Season of the Witch was in there with great keyboard swirly bits and Mr Marah rocking it on his guitar. Oh, and California Dreamin’ had a tasty jam in it (to be seen on my Instagram).

One after 909 stayed in, nice. I got a great quick snippet Carl and Simon Gibb singing, not an easy thing to do filming a drummer – there’s very few angles where he’s visible! I loved Shake Your Hips as did the crowd, all indeed shaking their hips and everything else, and all with the beat; they had the floor bouncing to the rhythm!

For shame that I write a whole blog post about a band and not mention the bass player; there, steady, reliable but rarely mentioned. Ewan Gibson, also part of Nicole’s Back-up Crew, the Black Diamond Express and no doubt others, he’s a tad busy. I’ll also give a mention to John Mackie the best on sound and lighting in Stramash, LA Woman is awesome anyway but he adds the cherry on top!

Hopefully The Buccaneers will be back soon, and they haven’t played Binkies in a while, just sayin’. The Scat Rats are back on the midnight watch at Whistlebinkies tomorrow night and next Tuesday (according to their website). Must get an early night tonight.

Odd balls and green eyes

Another rugby weekend done and dusted, the French fans will all be back home again after a grand weekend away. Some arrived early last Thurday (as noticed in Stramash in my last post), some stayed to carry on the party ’til Sunday night. Oh, I wasn’t witness to it ’til after Peaky Blinders had been on telly. Yay, the new and final series of Peaky Blinders is up and running, and I wasn’t being anywhere other than in front of my telly at nine o’clock on Sunday night. By ‘eck it was good, a fine tribute to the late actress Helen McCrory, Aunt Polly, who died almost a year ago.

Only after it did I tidy round from my evening meal and get ready to head out to Whistlebinkies. For why? The Buccaneers were scheduled to play at midnight. Now if you’ve been following my posts recently you may wonder if it was worth staying up so late – this time it was definitely happening, The Buccaneers said so on their Facebook page. I’ll admit to a slight hesitancy as I drank my way through a pint of Stewart’s Edinburgh Gold at just after midnight, oh yay, the band members started turning up, that helped wake me up! And I stayed awake ’til around three having the most splendid time drinking and dancing, it was a fine crowd there, all really enjoying the music. Mr Marah was on top form, well, all the band were. From pics on Facebook yesterday I think the keyboardist, Luke Cunningham, had just been on at Stramash which could explain his being the last to turn up but it was no problem to turn in a great performance. God, I’m so lucky to have such great musicians on my doorstep!

Not so lucky as the Welsh, though, well, the ones in Swansea. Whilst the Welsh may have been beaten by England on Saturday, they will have the first look at the new Logan’s Close line-up at Hangar 18 in Swansea on Thursday 17th March – jeez, I’m sooo jealous! I’ve never been to Swansea, don’t think I haven’t been pondering on a visit! The day after it’s a drive to The Elmer’s Arms in Bristol; again, somewhere I’ve never been, some very nice pubs there so I’m informed, hmmm. Saturday 19th March sees the band trotting north-east up to The Running Horse in Nottingham, then a left turn to Liverpool and the Prohibition Recording Studio on the Sunday evening before heading home to Auld Reekie. Might as well give you the other dates, that’s their long awaited return to the Voodoo Rooms on Sunday 27th (yay!!!) and then a skip across to Hamburg and the Indra Musikclub on the 31st; again, I’ve never been to Hamburg, I haven’t been anywhere (except Yorkshire) for over two years, maybe?!

I’ve noticed that the Nottingham gig is on Super Saturday, the final day of the Six Nations Rugby this year (so called as all three matches are on the same day). In years gone by that was a pub day, often the Greenmantle or The Blind Poet, ah, we were young, up for it and very, very drunk by the end of it. This year I’ll be down at the Mothership around that weekend, Nottingham is just down the road, well, under two hours down the road, oo.

Maybe I should just appreciate that the lads are having four dress rehearsals before the big one back here, the glass half-full approach. Yeah, I’m not really buying it. Swansea, Bristol, Nottingham, Liverpool, Logan’s Close are coming your way, you lucky, lucky bastards!
