Friday Night, Saturday Afternoon

Yay! Normal service has resumed on my telly! Well, I got a man in. New aerial and cable, apparently it’s a great view from the roof of my tenement block (not sure that will ever tempt me up there). I stayed inside and watched for the cable reel when he dropped it down the front of the building (in case there was anyone passing below!), the bit when he was more outside my window than in the flat, trying to put the cable neatly by the downpipe was unnerving, honestly, I had a strong urge to grab hold of his legs, convinced that he was going to tip right out! He didn’t.

I celebrated with a Strawberry Shortbread snacking bar I bought at the Farmers Market last Saturday from the wonderful Co Co Co. Oh, my goodness, Rob has come up with another masterpiece, they are divine! White chocolate, strawberry mallow and blondie shortbread with a dash of strawberry white chocolate for decoration. All those flavours and textures in every bite!! He’s a chocolate alchemist.

I thought I could do some clever twist there, something about music alchemists turning the same old notes, instruments and voices into a magical, awesome sound. Would you have gone with that or is it only me?! I googled alchemy in music for some validation of my thoughts, hmmm, yeah, no. So anyhoo, Awkward Family Portraits played the Speakeasy at the Voodoo Rooms a couple of weeks ago.

Pure gold, an enchanting, other world atmosphere! Their sound transports you on whims of fancy, a tour through a golden age Hollywood movie lot; there’s some soft shoe shuffle on one stage, a hoedown next door, a charleston, americano, every scene a gem with light and shade, wit and melancholy. The mixture of AFP‘s upright bass, violin and guitar along with Julen Santamaria’s very distinctive voice and the harmonies, all blended to perfection in the intimate setting of the Speakeasy. Oh, my heartses 💛

I floated out afterwards with a contented grin and a need to stroll in the Edinburgh night air. My meanderings took me by the Jolly Judge and through the Grassmarket, where bless my soul, if I wasn’t catching a faint strain of Babestation somewhere nearby! Ah yes, Mr Marah was in Maggie Dickson’s, I’ve never been in before, so obviously it was time I gave it the once over! Not really my style, but I liked it and the bar staff were great, and it’s always fun to hear Carl in pub singer mode. We had a wee chat in his break, then I headed home, er, via Whistlebinkies where The Full Kitkat were in full swing rocking the joint. Yes, one more for the road. Hey, as Friday nights go, it was up there.

The following afternoon I was back in Whistlebinkies to catch the Scat Rats but not until the around the start of the second set (it was a sunny day outside). Now I regularly turn up into the second or third song of the first Scat Rats set, which, by coincidence is often Babestation, a fact that had made Friday night’s encounter extra amusing to me; so imagine my complete surprise that I walked into Binkies and they were playing, yes, you’ve guessed it Babestation! They never play it in the second set, never. I was freaked, but not as much as them…

It being a lovely sunny Saturday afternoon, Binkies was dead, so the guys decided to have fun, mix things up, play whatever came to mind (wish I’d bloody turned up earlier now!) When I still hadn’t appeared by the second set, Carl jokingly suggested they play Babestation as it was a surefire way to conjure me up. Yes, they were more freaked than me when I sauntered in, hahaha!! I was treated to In The Morning (not played in ages), Give It To Me a Logan’s Close classic that I don’t think I’ve ever heard the Rats play before, and newby White Lies played at the last Logan’s Close gig ( I’ve put a reel on my Instagram with two very bad splices between the two versions).

Back last month, in a cave…

As promised last time, my musings on the LC gig, I just didn’t think it would take me so long to write it! I have no good reasons for my tardiness, only feeble excuses that even I’m not buying. I’ve signed up for a hypnotherapy course in an attempt to address things, we should be able to tell if its working in a couple of months. Anyhoo…

So 17th January was the fourth time I’ve seen Logan’s Close headline at The Caves, it is a rather fine venue, very Edinburgh. The first time was way back in November 2017 for the release of their single Girl; second time was for the release of Lost In You in February 2020; third time in May ’23, er, just because?? There had been several single releases in the previous months from the upcoming album Heart-shaped Jacuzzi, momentum? The Close have played in plenty of the music venues around town over the years,

Rather fitting that this headline show was at the start of a new year; setlists can gently morph through time, then wallop, a seismic shift, a new landscape, which in turn will bobble along awhile, yes indeed, this gig showed a new vista to the fans. The Heart-Shaped Jacuzzi songs are now beloved LC classics already, and the lads have a load of new stuff they want to play (yay), so, no Lost In You or Eleonara (fair enough, let her rest, she’s been very busy), and no I Want You! Hey, even as The Scat Rats, Marah and Rough have put Listen to your Mother and In the Morning on the shelf (I do hope they’ll get brought down and dusted off from time to time as both are pure gold). Fair do’s, we were treated to five newbies, eight HSJ toons, and one re-vamp, oh, and Carl doing a bit of crowd surfing!

Local bands Puppy Teeth and Bernstrum and the Men were the supports; I haven’t seen either band play but recognise their faces from Whistlebinkies the last couple of years. Of course, I was in Sneaky’s early on, so still haven’t seen the Pups but did catch BatM’s set, psychedelic garage rock, I think is the right description. The crowd loved them and were having great fun, I watched from up on the balcony taking in the whole dynamic. Whilst not really my bag, I certainly see their appeal, and there’s some interesting stuff going on, worth keeping an eye on, methinks. When the place cleared a tad as folk disappeared outside and to the bar, I mosied down to grab a spot near the front and middle (I’m usually to one side at gigs, not tonight) – no great lummoxes came and stood in front of me! Yay! And then it was time…

They sauntered on to rapturous applause, the atmosphere was electric, ooo, straight in with Hot Blondes In Your Area Tonight, no messing about! Interestingly, to me anyway, last time in this venue they ended with Hot Blondes and began with Lost In You which they’d finished with the previous time; I am rather good at seeing accidental patterns, you know. From blondes to babes, Babestation wove it’s seductive groove around the room, I love Carl’s singing on this, always gives me the chills; which is what the band literally gave us next. Chillz is a newby, and incidentally one that I’ve heard the Scat Rats playing in Whistlebinkies (I have clips of both, so watch out for something!)

Gav always looks chill

Scott was getting hot after Chillz so removed his jacket to exuberant hoots and cheers from the crowd, SeanKeys was in stitches playing through the intro to Dans Le Jardin until Scotty had sorted himself out (he did make rather a palaver of it). I couldn’t help wondering why there was a huge pot plant placed in front of Sean!? Didn’t stop me getting a great shot or two.

From lush loungeyness to the sparser intensity of Half & Half and on to the second new number Costume Changes, where the guitar break conjures up half-formed images of ott theatrics (okay, I have a clip of it that I’ve watched, a few times). Back again to HSJ and the brooding baroque majesty of Curious Terrain followed by some Gouching On The 33. Oh, my heartses!

Mind blown?!

The room was buzzing from euphoric bliss, riding high on the sounds and energy emanating from the stage, and boy, what an excellent spot I had to take it all in! (I would love to know how someone with synesthesia would experience an LC gig, epic or overload?)

As the band could do no wrong, time to bring out more new untested tunes, White Lies tripped poppily along, and by Femme Fatale Carl was feeling the need to bask in the waves washing over the room – the fans obliged and kept him high on a wee crowd surfing.

I think I let out an audible guffaw when Scott introduced the next “new” song, Gallus Laces, it’s been re-vamped from the previous pre-covid version, apparently. So not new to some of us, definitely not if you’ve heard their LimbicTV CD. I still have no idea what the song’s about but I love how it comes across both edgy and lackadaisical at the same time! Falling In Slow Motion completed the set, well, you know, the lads left the stage for a few minutes, as bands do, the crowd hoolers, stamps, claps…. and they’re back on.

After such a great gig, the encore had to be something big – it doesn’t get much bigger than the grand opus that is Mock Marble Linoleum a wild ride to raise everyone up for the final tune Heart-Shaped Jacuzzi. The room sang it’s hearts out, a bloody magnificent end to the evening ❤️

I didn’t go on anywhere afterwards, just took a slight meander home, in the dark, to savour the feelings of unadulterated bliss before they ebbed away. Oh, my heartses.

A wondrous thing indeed

Messaging with a friend the other day, I mentioned I still hadn’t written a review for Heart-Shaped Jacuzzi, “they must think you hate it by now,” he replied. WHAT!?! NOOOOOOO! I love it to pieces. How good to hear the whole album together, Logan’s Close had been slowly dripfeeding us singles and videos since last October, now all the pieces of the jigsaw are in place, yay.

Ten vignettes, ten tales of human frailties and harsh realities; the lyrics are brilliant, pulling no punches with touches of world-weariness while the music swirls around, setting and shifting scenes, completing each picture. To borrow from David Lynch, these ducks all have their eyes in the right place. Ten tunes that will make you feel, build you up, deplete you, cocoon you in a euphoric haze, shatter your heart to pieces – or is that just me?

Starting off with a bang, Hot Blondes In Your Area Tonight gets your toes tapping, shoulders jiggling, hips swinging, before you know it you’ll be doing the Slosh (a dance from the early 70s). The banging bounciness of the music belies the story in the lyrics, not much of a life being lived here. From one stuck in inertia, to a tale of a relationship turned sour.

Heart-Shaped Jacuzzi paints a vivid picture, like a 60s sitcom in 4 minutes, do check out the video, both sound and vision are beautifully stylised and lush (Read Never leave the dishes for more) . Next up another disillusioned life, Babestation, already a Logan’s Close classic, first performed on the LimbicTV recording, now a regular part of The Scat Rats acoustic set; sublime vocals already especially Carl’s, how did Dennis Rux get them sounding even better?! Atmospheric, sparse with a soft seductive rhythm.

The sense of despondency ratchets up in Curious Terrain, a relationship seriously on the rocks, but don’t let that put you off it! It may take a few listens, but there’s so much to absorb here; foreboding harsh monotones, plaintive harmonies, Scott’s vocals and words cut deep on this one. The rich, brooding guitars and swirling keyboards have a very Deep Purple feel to me.

From the grand baroque of Curious Terrain to the sparse bleak beauty of Calculations + Guesses, if this track doesn’t move you, maybe check you have a pulse. So ends Side 1 on the vinyl; after the sublime inner torment of Calculations + Guesses you may need a moment or two before getting up to turn the record over.

Side 2, new day, new scene; as Gavin sets a jaunty rhythm going I picture a bright sunny morning, our chap steps out his door, and cue the keyboards. Oh yes, for me Merry-Go-Round is like a 60s film musical number, even down to the tempo change at the interlude when a different set of bright young things would dance briefly into shot; that, or a montage scene, someone get Edgar Wright now!

After all that frivolity, it’s time to crash back to reality and Gouching On The 33. Languid and soporific, the spaciousness, the deliciously delicate harmonies, Scott’s velvety tones; a serene portrait of another casuality of life. This is one of the songs Marah and Rough play regularly, it never fails to move me, hmmm, to still me more like. Half & Half has a lot to recommend it, but for me it’s all about the bass, love it; it’s another track that requires a few listens to really tune into and appreciate all it’s charms, but so worth it.

Track 4 (or 9 on the CD) Mock Marble Linoleum is another grand rock opus to match Curious Terrain; again, parts are very reminiscent of early Deep Purple. So many layers and textures to pick up on here, and Scott really goes for it on this tale of a self-delusional, self-loathing character; the sudden ending suggests a car wreck in my mind’s eye.

Dans Le Jardin brings Heart-Shaped Jacuzzi to a bitter-sweet end. A cool, almost nonchalant, wind-down after all the more turbulent tales. And though it’s not a favourite of mine, goddammit, there’s a whole can of earworms in there, bits and pieces of it forever popping up!

So is the album what I expected? You know, I didn’t place any expectations on how it would sound, this is a new thing, a step forward, Logan’s Close were taking a bunch of new songs into a studio, serious time. There was potentially a chance that in the studio LC could become something other; ha, I was 99.5% sure that whatever came forth from Hamburg would be utterly brilliant (0.5% still critically brilliant, but with a but). Oh yay, how right I was!

A prelude to a wondrous thing

“A polished studio album will surely be a wondrous thing” and how right I was! I wrote those words back in February last year in If you don’t ask …… (clicking on the title should take you to the post, should) just after getting my mitts on the Logan’s Close Live at LimbicTV CD. Checking back on that one, led to looking back at my other posts on the LimbicTV recording and on to playing the CD; then playing Babestation and Mock Marble Linoleum back-to-back with the new album versions (well, back and forth, forth and back, a few times – I was having fun).

Nine days and a trip down to Yorkshireland later, I wrote Driving with Elsie appraising the CD. Reading it again I noticed that Mock Marble Linoleum was now “pretty special” – back when I saw it performed on LimbicTV it was “fine but nothing special” (from my blog post So Close so fine). Well, I’d had a 400 mile return car trip to get into it! Now on Heart-Shaped Jacuzzi, it’s been buffed up, not quite so heavy, but richer; a perfect progression.

Babestation grabbed me from the very first – beautiful desolation, Carl’s lead vocals, then Scott’s velvet backing, blimey Charlie! Totally blown away! Much as I love the whole LimbicTV CD, this track stands apart (still), so how happy was I when I heard it would be on the new album (as Larry, Moe and Curly). Back in April 2021 I’d written “definitely put out this track, please, please, like this, nothing added nothing taken away”, well, in some ways they have. The soul and mood are the same, but OMG, the production takes it so much further (Dennis Rux really has the magic touch).

Lucky me, The Scat Rats regularly play an acoustic version of Babestation that sends me every time I hear it. Though mainly covers, the Rats always played a few LC songs, and now there’s the album to promote, oh yay, they spoil us! There’s clips in my Instagram reels, as much for my own keepsakes as sharing their brilliance with the world.

Deep in a cave in Edinburgh…

Well, that was rather excellent on Thursday night! Most definitely if I had a time machine I’d go back and enjoy it a few times more! Support band the Cumbiatones certainly warmed up the crowd with their South American grooves, bodies relaxed and loosened, gyrating to the band’s compulsive rhythms – warmed up and chilled out!

Scott’s green Gretsch was sat waiting centre stage, it truly is a magnificent creature!

The last time Logan’s Close played The Caves was back in February 2020, to launch the new single Lost In You, played as the final number that night. Quite fitting then to open with it – the crowd went wild with approval, the LC roller-coaster had begun, everyone was onboard, time for some fun!

Naturally, most of the setlist was from the upcoming album Heart-shaped Jacuzzi (and part of the set too – recognise the telly?) with a few classics thrown in the mix. Funny, that, Listen To Your Mother is now an old LC number, most definitely a classic though. I first saw them perform it in Sneaky Pete’s six years ago (exactly six years ago on the 23rd); it’s been the end number, an encore number, now its settled within the set. Party bangers, introspective moods, tales from the Close, they were all there, changing the pace, leading us on.

The crowd were putty in their hands, gleefully bouncy to Eleonara, strung out by Give It To Me (or is that one just me?), punctuating every start and end with rapturous noise. The latest single Gouching On The 33 popped up about midway, bloody great it was! We were pulled sharply from the laguidity of Gouching by a cracking drum solo by Gavin, and how good was that ease into the start of Babestation? Oh, it was good, so succulent a transition.

From possibly the classic from current LC, to their first classic LTYM, on to the heavy stuff, Mock Marble Linoleum is a wondrous creation with it’s heavy guitar sounds, swirly keyboards and Scott’s velvety narrative. After a wander over Curious Terrain it was time for another LC classic, I’m so so glad it’s still in there, I Want You, always a stunner, if it doesn’t give you chills, well.

Swirly keyboards in mind, I was kinda wondering why SeanKeys was seated, he’s usually jumping around! Was he injured? I caught up with him after the gig, nah, he was fine, he’d been told to sit there and although he missed bouncing about, he admitted that his playing was probably better for it. I actually quite liked the little scene with the lamp, SeanKeys isn’t always very visible off to the side, not tonight!

Fantastic Man was on the setlist too, but the lads were running out of time (there’s a very strict ten o’clock finish in this venue); they made a quick dive off the stage to be cheered back on for encores. I’ll just say here that Dans Le Jardin will forever now have a subtitle Sorry Mum for me (you had to be there). Go out with a bang, they say, Hot Blondes In Your Area Tonight did that with bells on.

What a belter of a gig! Again, please! The lads had James Gilhooly of Dislexic Film onstage with them, filming the whole thing (never play Twister against that guy, he’s very flexible). I wonder what they’re planning to do with the results – should be great viewing! And if I were to pick a favourite from the night? Oo, tough choice, Merry-Go-Round.

A red beret, a megaphone, Action!

Am I right? Belly nicely full, strong coffee beside me, air scented with essential oil vapours, yes I’m right, time to write something. Oh, today’s oils are grapefruit for levity and clarity, frankincense to ease my still ailing body and fennel, just because it’s been in my oils box for ages and needs using up. Since I last wrote I’ve been lurgied, losing my voice for three days, it’s come back very grudgingly accompanied by a body-shaking cough, bah.

So, I was about to head back to Yorkshireland for Mothering Sunday and Logan’s Close were about to release the video to Babestation ….. didn’t manage to hit the road until the crack of noon, did manage a first look at the video before I left. Haha, watching the video reminded me of a bit from my review of the single release “… a seedy wedding band playing unnoticed …” inspired by a song by Fringe favourites Dead Cat Bounce; I grabbed the CD for my journey.

Dead Cat Bounce were a bunch of talented Irish lads who combined their musical and comedic skills to produce witty, bitingly funny, un-PC songs (this was back 2008 to 2012). The scenario DCB painted in Christians In Love was what sprung to my mind while listening to Babestation. From being a song about a young couple on their wedding night, a sudden twist reveals it’s actually being played in the couple’s room by the wedding band who don’t plan to leave until they’ve been paid (the young newlyweds are “possibly deaf or just incredibly focused”). I’d envisaged Logan’s Close in a back corner of the room, not quite, they’re on a different tv channel.

Once down in Yorkshireland it was all go, ’til I was laid low and silent on the Monday; at least I finally had some time to check out Babestation again. That was a week ago, I’ve watched it a few times since. Wow, there’s a lot packed into those five minutes and twelve seconds!! (short, intense, bizarre, like you’ve just been Tango’d) Love it, the eye is in the right place on this duck, LC‘s go-to film guy James Gilhooly is so in tune with their vibe, so many exquisite little niblets (yes, okay, I’ve watched it plenty times).

A few of those niblets to tantalise your tastebuds – the retro television, also seen in the Heart-shaped Jacuzzi video, is sooo cool. Greenscreen guy, ha, a nice touch! Hats, wigs, fake moustaches, perve it up with a nod to 60s looks. Lots of closeup shots, very closeup, eyes, fingers, mouths, and a nipple shot!! That’s a nipple belonging to Gareth Mutch a local comic and actor who plays the Babe brilliantly, going through a whole gamut of emotions within five minutes (I told you it’s intense). The punch-ups look great but Gavin Lamont takes first prize for violence – and he seems so quiet! And the potentials waiting to do Babestation auditions, haha!

The tempo of the action beautifully mirrors the changes in mood and tempo of the music. I like the mixing up of eras, the modern with retro 60s, mirroring the Close‘s sound; even the modern isn’t that modern, apart from maybe the caller’s nails? This “midnight observer” is gorgeous, feisty, sexy – from the glimpses we get to see of her (erm, I’ve no idea of what sorts phone up these channels, yes, I’m that naive, but I’m guessing she’s not what a female equivalent to the usual caller would look like). I had wondered about this particular video, but yay, they pulled it off – how else to film Babestation but by subverting the whole scenario? A highly entertaining fast-paced, fist-flying film, Edgar Wright-like glimmers in there.

Do give it a watch, as Kenny Everett would say, it’s all done in the best possible taste! The next single is already being lined up and it is another beaut, well, all the songs are, but it’s another that The Scat Rats occasionally sing which always adds a little extra sparkle for me. They’ll hopefully do it at Whistlebinkies on Saturday afternoon, some time after four.

Lights, music, camera – action

Oops, it’s thirteen days since my last post, and this is gonna be a very short and sweet catch-up as it’s very late and I need to be up early in the morning. I say I need to be up early, I intend to be, really I do.

Well Everything Everywhere All At Once did brilliantly at the Oscars, just as I thought it deserved. Yes, the most bonkers film of the decade won big time, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Director, Best Picture, along with Oscars for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis. So so happy the ladies were recognised for being bloody awesome in it.

And in other awards news, The Jolly Judge has just been named as Branch Pub of the Year 2023 by CAMRA Edinburgh & South East Scotland. An excellent choice! One of my favourite Edinburgh pubs to be found in James Court off the Lawnmarket (near the top of the Royal Mile); a cosy wee place, friendly bar staff and always a good selection of real ciders and real ales (also dog-friendly).

Since I returned from a wee trip away I’ve caught The Scat Rats twice and The Buccaneers, yay. No keyboards again, I noticed; I also noticed the sound and lighting guy was having a lot of fun with The Buccaneers set – check out the reel I’ve put on Instagram of Simon Gibb’s drum solo on Black Magic Woman! Hmm, on Tuesday evening in Whistlebinkies the Rats got blasted with the smoke machine, engineers getting sassy!

Ah, it’s just after midnight so it’s now two weeks since the lads released their latest single Babestation from their upcoming album Heart-shaped Jacuzzi (I’ve just now noticed that it’s one word not two, I have some editing to do). It’s had nearly 2,500 streams on Spotify so far, I highly recommend you check it out! Besides being part of the Logan’s Close library of sound, Babestation has been added to Scotify a playlist of the best new alternative music from Scotland.

And sometime in the next 24 hours the video is being released, yes, a video for Babestation!! LC have put out a tiny wee bit to tantalise us. I won’t say anything about what I’ve seen so far, apart from, it’s not a video you’ll forget you’ve seen, apparently the band came up with the concept for it whilst in Hamburg (it figures).

G’bye Ken, hi babe

What a day! A new single from Logan’s Close and a sad farewell to Ken Bruce on Radio 2. Old Ken is going over to Greatest Hits Radio and he’s taking Pop Master with him, so good luck Radio 2 finding something to replace that ten thirty fix! I suspect a great many will be retuning their radios. Reading about the move, Ken will be playing music from the 70s, 80s and 90s on his new show which is fine but I think I would get a tad bored. I do like hearing newer stuff in the mix; different tastes and flavours enhancing the platter of sounds.

A neat segue to the juicy spiciness that is Logan’s Close! I can think of a number of LC tunes easily playable on a classic tunes radio show that would have folk wondering how they’d missed hearing it at the time! So many throwback sounds teasing misgotten memories. That evil joker of a friend could easily get you to remember that night, you know, that night, the brunette wearing The Who t-shirt, this was playing – god, yes, yes it was!

Just after midnight another succulent dish was added to the Spotify menu from those master chefs of musical morsels. I feel weird calling it new – I first heard it almost two years ago on the LimbicTV performance and for the last year it’s been a staple of The Scat Rats sets. The song? Babestation, a word that makes certain ears prick up, there’s always a few looks of acknowledgement every time and yes, the song is about what has sprung to those minds. Call me naive, I’d never heard of it, but Mr Marah’s words paint a very vivid picture for the uninitiated.

Babestation is inspired by a late night live adult tv channel, yup, porn. The song oozes with heavy sensuality and sleaze. Carl Marah always sounds beautifully plaintive singing this, but with added the studio production, oh my heartses, the hollow bleakness shattered me to pieces! I loved this song from the off, so was a teensy bit anxious how the studio version would sound, ha, no worries, the Close picked the right midwife to help deliver their baby – Dennis Rux at Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Studios (midwife or obstetrician? Hmmm).

Frisky rhythms from the bass and drums drive the song along, like keeping the babe upbeat to get through it all. Plenty sparseness of guitars and keyboards, a musical nonchalance to the scene (Oo, just saw the lads as a seedy wedding band playing unnoticed in the corner of her room). The verses each build from an almost introspective view from the babe, to looking out at her audience, to the hard coldness of it all, then Showtime, folks! I like the drop downs to quieter moments and the usual slight creepiness to the keyboards at times. The Scat Rats swirl Babestation down so well, but with the rest of LC added in, the result is intoxicating, love the hollow echoiness of Scott’s cries and the drum beat still jauntily going on.

Driving with Elsie

Today has seen bright sunshine and blue skies over Edinburgh, very chilly with it, as the forecast predicted. Annoyingly they got it very wrong for yesterday morning! The forecast had promised snow from the early hours, some heavy, awoke all expectant and excited I did – bloody none! And I’d come back up on Thursday for it. Well, and also to avoid Eunice, that’s Storm Eunice (who came up with Eunice?! What sort of name is that for a storm?).

I was down in deepest, dampest Yorkshire again. Very damp indeed, not much time was spent out-of-doors, it was ‘orrible! The few hours of fine were spent wandering round Hebden Bridge, note to self, some shops are closed Tuesdays as well as Mondays. Still a tasty lunch was had and a few purchases made, I do like Hebden Bridge, and there’s usually a fine calibre of busker in the Square.

Naturally, my choice of travelling audio accompaniment included my new Logan’s Close Live CD, at 63 minutes its perfect for the last legs down and up. In the gathering dusk I hurtled across the moors to Scott letting rip on I Want You, followed by the classic Listen To Your Mother – that’s when the low fuel light started flashing (yeah, yeah, mother, make sure there’s plenty in the tank, I know); after that first, oh bugger, I reasoned there was actually around 40 miles worth left so no worries. On the homeward leg it takes about an hour to get from Abington services (junction 13 off the M74) to home, that is, without slowcoaches on the road; so perfect, with a second playing for Eleanora as I pulled up.

Eleanora is a bouncing upbeat babe of a tune, a catchy infectious earworm so it is! Everything a good Logan’s Close song should be, and also something slightly new, different but still undeniably LC. Sean Keys’ (that’s what he gets called, anyway) keyboards are at times reminiscent of Jon Lord on early Deep Purple, noticeably so on Mock Marble Linoleum. I’ll admit it’s taken me a while to get into this track, my original take was “fine but nothing special”, I’d like to update that, Mock Marble Linoleum is fine and dandy, like a mid 70s rock opus, swirling keyboards, grand majestic riffs, Scott going for it, yeah, it is pretty special.

Paralysed is a whirling dervish of a tune with Carl taking lead vocals this time. This lady who “reached inside and stripped you of your core” sounds like AC/DC’s Soul Stripper; two very different songs but the same female lineage (in my head, anyway). Gallus Laces is great, a lackadaisical swing and hook to it, love Scott and Carl’s vocals together on the chorus.

Probably (at least at time of writing this) my favourite track is Babestation, from the opening drumbeats, sultry keyboards, offhand guitar, and then Mr Marah plaintively narrates the girl’s nightlife; the spacious sleaziness and Carl’s vocals almost echoey, with added Scott on backing, omg, it’s like sliding into a hazy drug-addled dream state! I’ve also had the pleasure of hearing The Scat Rats take on this song a number of times ❤

Mind, Give It To Me is a very close second on this, right from Sean’s piano intro and Scott’s and Carl’s harmonies; the guitar sound, the space, more beautiful desolation from the lads. I Want You is always near the top spot at any gig but the competition is tough here, even with Sean back on the piano and Scott’s sublime vocals. It would be hard to place all fifteen tracks in an order of preference, really, after my top five I couldn’t separate the others. God, I love this CD! Will this recording, this moment in time, ever be made available to anyone else? I don’t know, but if it is, no self-respecting LC fan would be without it!
